Matthew 27:35

The Wooden Pole

After impaling him on the stake, they divided his garments among themselves by casting lots.

The verb *σταυρώσαντες* derives from *σταυρός* (stauros), translated here as "stake" as the Pioneer Translation consistently renders this word, reflecting the primary classical meaning of an upright pole rather than the traditional cross. *Διεμερίσαντο* means "divided among themselves," and *βάλλοντες κλῆρον* literally means "throwing a lot," rendered naturally as "casting lots."
