FUNCTIONAL FAITH

Why this exists

Faith for people who left the building

Not to burn it down. To find out whether the thing it was built around is still worth walking toward.

What this is

Functional Faith is a biblical scholarship site. Every week we take a verse, open the Greek or Hebrew behind it, and let the original language speak for itself. What you take from that is yours to decide.

The site also includes a growing library of articles, a 30-day reading plan through the Gospels, a scripture comparison tool across four translations with the original Greek and Hebrew, and the Pioneer Reading — scholarly renderings of key passages where the original language has been most consistently obscured by the translation tradition.

An honest note

Some of what you find here will challenge positions you have held for a long time. That is not the goal — but it may be the result.

We are not here to be unnecessarily antagonistic. We are here because we are Christians, and Christians are called to pursue truth wherever it leads. Jesus prayed for his disciples the night before he died: ‘Sanctify them by the truth. Your word is truth.’ John 17:17.

That is the only standard we are trying to meet. The original languages are the standard. The text is the authority. What the Greek and Hebrew actually say is the question we keep returning to — not what tradition has decided they must mean.

If you come here as a convinced Trinitarian, you are welcome. If you come here having walked away from everything, you are welcome. The road does not check your theology at the gate. It asks only whether you are willing to keep walking.

What this is not

This is not a church, a denomination, or an institution. There is nothing to join and nothing to buy.

This is not spiritual direction or pastoral counselling. The writing here is one person's honest engagement with the text. Take what helps and leave the rest.

This is not an anti-church project. Many people who read this still attend churches they love. The criticism here is of institution over Pioneer, formula over road — not of the people inside the building.

This is not a claim to have all the answers. Where the scholarship is genuinely uncertain, we say so. Honest inquiry is the practice, not a creed.

Who is writing

Oliver T. Shepherd

I spent a long time inside the walls before I admitted how much of my faith was borrowed certainty. Functional Faith is my attempt to trade it for something slower and truer — questions I actually live with, and a Pioneer I would still follow. I write the Monday letter myself, one week at a time.

Oliver T. Shepherd is a pen name. The author has chosen to write under a pseudonym — a long-standing tradition in theological and religious writing. All content is written, reviewed, and published by the person behind the name. Copyright is held by the legal person behind the pen name.

What we hold

The road over the monument

He is the Pioneer, not the statue. Faith is something you walk, not merely something you affirm.

Doubt is not the enemy

The opposite of faith was never doubt. It was indifference. Honest questions are welcome here.

The table is wide

He was known by who he ate with. Any faith that draws the circle tighter than he did has lost the plot.

A note on method

Some content on this site — including scripture commentary and translation assistance — is produced with the help of Claude, Anthropic's AI. All AI-assisted content is reviewed before publication and reflects the theological framework of Functional Faith. We disclose this because transparency about method is part of the integrity we are trying to practise.

One question every Monday
