John 3:1–21

Nicodemus Visits Jesus at Night

16For God loved the world in this way: he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

*Monogenes* is rendered "only-begotten" rather than the flattened "one and only," preserving the generative relationship between the Father and the Son — the Son derives his existence from the Father, which is distinct from the Father himself. *Apolesēi* ("perish") is translated at full strength; the contrast is between destruction and *zōēn aiōnion* ("eternal life"), not merely separation. The phrase "in this way" renders *houtōs* accurately, indicating the manner of God's love rather than merely its degree.

17For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but so that the world might be saved through him.

"Sent" translates ἀπέστειλεν (apostellō), preserving the clear sender/sent distinction — God is the one who acts by sending; the Son is the one sent. The purpose clause introduced by ἵνα is rendered "so that" to capture its final force. "Through him" (διʼ αὐτοῦ) keeps the Son in his proper role as instrument of salvation rather than its source.

1

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.

Among the Pharisees there was a man named Nicodemus, a leader among the Jews.

2

He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs You are doing if God were not with him.”

This man went to Jesus one night, and said to him, “Master, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can show the signs that you do, unless God is with him.”

3

Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. ”

Jesus answered him, “I tell you, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born over again from above!”

4

“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?”

Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother’s womb over again and be born?”

5

Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

Jesus answered, “I tell you, if a man does not owe his birth to water and spirit, he cannot get into the Kingdom of God.

6

Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.

Whatever owes its birth to the physical is physical, and whatever owes its birth to the Spirit is spiritual.

7

Do not be amazed that I said, ‘You must be born again.’

Do not wonder at my telling you that you must be born over again from above.

8

The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

The wind blows wherever it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. That is the way with everyone who owes his birth to the Spirit.”

9

“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

Nicodemus said to him, “How can that be?”

10

“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and you do not understand these things?

Jesus answered, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet ignorant of this?

11

Truly, truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, and yet you people do not accept our testimony.

I tell you, we know what we are talking about and we have seen the things we testify to, yet you all reject our testimony.

12

If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

If you will not believe the earthly things that I have told you, how can you believe the heavenly things I have to tell?

13

No one has ascended into heaven except the One who descended from heaven—the Son of Man.

Yet no one has gone up into heaven except the Son of Man who came down from heaven.

14

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

And just as Moses in the desert lifted the serpent up in the air, the Son of Man must be lifted up,

15

that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.

so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

16

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that no one who believes in him should be lost, but that they should all have eternal life.

17

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

For God did not send his Son into the world to pass judgment upon the world, but that through him the world might be saved.

18

Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

No one who believes in him has to come up for judgment. Anyone who does not believe stands condemned already, for not believing in God’s only Son.

19

And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.

And the basis of the judgment is this, that the light has come into the world, and yet, because their actions were wicked, men have loved the darkness more than the light.

20

Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

For everyone who does wrong hates the light and will not come to it, for fear his actions will be exposed.

21

But whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen clearly that what he has done has been accomplished in God.”

But everyone who is living the truth will come to the light, to show that his actions have been performed in dependence upon God.
