Deuteronomy 6:4–9

The Shema Israel

Hear, Israel: Jehovah is our God, Jehovah is one.

YHWH is rendered as Jehovah throughout, as the Pioneer Translation consistently treats the divine name. The Hebrew *echad* means "one" in the sense of a unified singularity or numerical oneness — it is the foundational declaration of monotheism in the Hebrew scriptures, and is translated plainly as "one" without theological softening. This verse, the Shema, establishes the singular identity of Jehovah as Israel's God and forms the theological anchor of the Pioneer Translation.

4

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

5

And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

6

These words I am commanding you today are to be upon your hearts.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7

And you shall teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

8

Tie them as reminders on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.

And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

9

Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.

And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.
