Berean Standard Bible
39And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads
The Wooden Pole
Those passing by were hurling insults at him, shaking their heads.
The word *ἐβλασφήμουν* (eblasphēmoun) is translated "hurling insults" rather than the softer "reviling" or "mocking," reflecting the full weight of the imperfect tense indicating continuous, contemptuous speech directed at him. *Παραπορευόμενοι* indicates people passing by in transit, not a gathered crowd. Standard rendering otherwise.
