Berean Standard Bible
3He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.
The Suffering Servant
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sufferings and acquainted with sickness. And like one from whom people hide their faces, he was despised, and we regarded him as nothing.
*Nibzeh* (נִבְזֶה) appears twice in the verse — translated "despised" both times, preserving the deliberate repetition the Hebrew uses for emphasis. *Chadal ishim* (חֲדַל אִישִׁים) literally means "forsaken/rejected of men" — one from whom men withdraw — rendered "rejected by men" to capture that sense of active human avoidance. *Lo chashabnuhu* (לֹא חֲשַׁבְנֻהוּ) means "we did not reckon him" or "we did not account him" — translated "we regarded him as nothing," conveying the full weight of that dismissal.
